Back Pain - Disease of Modern world

In today’s world of hustle-bustle, most people end up having a back pain. It develops due to lack of exercise and sedentary life style. But the disease is most commonly prevalent among computer professionals who tend to develop back pain at a very early age. It starts with wrong sitting posture, elongated time spent in front of the computer, lack of exercise, and so on. When treated early back pain can be completely eradicated. Depending on the patient’s history, there are several types of back pain: Upper, middle, and low back pain, acute back pain, and chronic back pain.
• Upper, Middle, and Low Back Pain is a common concern. Upto 50 % of adult usually develops back pain once in their lives. It is not a specific disease but rather an easily recoverable medical condition. • Acute back pain occurs suddenly. Usually after a sudden fall from a ladder, lifting something really heavy. But with proper treatment this pain goes off quickly. It lasts less then six weeks. It is the common type of back pain. • Chronic back pain lingers longer time than acute pain, sometimes more than three months. But right exercise and medication can help it to heal.
Symptom The pain in the back is itself a symptom. Sometimes back pain is triggered by abdominal disorders like, appendicitis, ovarian disorders, kidney diseases, pelvic infections, bladder infections and aneurysms
Back Pain Causes Certain types of spinal disease can cause acute back pain, like Spinal stenosis and Cauda equina syndrome. Patient suffering severe back pain also experiences bowel or bladder dysfunction. In this situation there is a severe inability to control urination.
Musculoskeletal syndromes also produces lower back pain including pain over localized area restricted to a peripheral nerve. Muscle stretching usually relieves the pain. Fibromyalgia produces pain on 11 of 18 points in the low back area and this is often followed by muscle stiffness, ache, and fatigue.
Other causes of low back pain include bone infection (osteomyelitis or sacroiliitis). This pain increases during night due to continuous sitting and standing. Cancerous tumor also triggers lower back pain.
Medical Treatment Variety of treatment options are available but proper diet, exercise, and rest can help regain faster. Bed rest is the best medicine. Usually two days of complete bed rest is recommended, accompanied with heat application can significantly relieve pain.
When recovered, weight training, aerobics can help gain muscle strength which can completely remove back pain. Acetaminophen and ibuprofen are often used for controlling pain.
Some people prefer surgery but this can cause unnecassry complication. Therapy provides long term benefit. Pain killers such as asprin, Ecotrin, Tylenol can be taken for immediate relieve, however no medicine can completely ward off back pain. Exercise is the only answer.
